What is BIS Certification?
Anyone who has been in business knows that customers are king. It is therefore extremely vital for
businesses to provide a set quality standard on any products they sell.
BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards, and it is the “National Standards Body of India” under
the Department of Consumer affairs i.e. Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
BIS is one the most important agency of India that assures standardization of domestic and
international products and when products have BIS Certification, it is proof that the product passes
Indian Quality standards.

What all products are covered under BIS Certification?
The list of products is never-ending, this means that products are continually being added and quite
possibly, there won’t be an end to the list as we move forward to the future. There are a lot of products
that have to conform to BIS Certification, some of them are as follows:

  • The cement that is holding your rooms and buildings, that need BIS Certification
  • The laptops, the mobile phones that you use every day, also need BIS Certification
  • That AC which is keeping you cool in summers and the heaters that give you the cosy feeling
in the chilly winters? Yes, they need BIS Certification too

Here are links to the product list that are under “compulsory” BIS Certification:

  1. Scheme – I (ISI Mark Scheme)
  2. Scheme – II (Registration Scheme):
  3. Scheme – IV ( Grant Of Certificate Of Conformity)

What’s the difference between BIS and ISI Certification?
ISI, acronym of Indian Standards Institution was the initial National Standards Body of India before it
being replaced by BIS i.e. Bureau of Indian Standards in January 1987.
ISI Mark is one of the most significant and the most recognizable certifications in our country
India. ISI Mark is that mark that certifies that the product conforms to the Indian Standard which
has been set by BIS i.e. Bureau of Indian Standards.

Is it mandatory to have BIS Certification?
Indian customers are won by guarantees and BIS Certification is that guarantee of the quality of a
product. Although a certification, it is also a tool for many businesses to use as a way of marketing
their products.
So, the real question: does your company need the BIS standard Certification? Yes, but that is when
your company’s products come under the “compulsory” list as we’ve mentioned above.

Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, BIS Certification is not only a certification that is mandatory by the government
but it also acts as proof of quality assurance to customers of our country. The customers in India are
extremely aware of quality standards and whenever there is a purchase decision to be made, one of
the first things that come to their mind is whether they have an “ISI Mark”.
