BIS Certification for Air Conditioner (AC) – How To Get The Certification?

The ever-growing need for Air Conditioner (AC)

Climate change has had a devastating impact on India. Temperatures in the northern portions of the nation exceeded 50 degrees Celsius in 2019. Indian summers have routinely broken heat records in the last decade or two, and there is little indication of relief from heatwaves in the near future, making air conditioning an increasingly crucial feature in Indian houses.

Increasing demand for household appliances, combined with a relatively low penetration rate, has left the Indian air conditioner market with lots of opportunities to develop, with 9.7 million units expected to be sold in the fiscal year 2023.

DID YOU KNOW? Since October 2020, the Indian government has prohibited the import of ready-to-install air conditioners, offering a boost to domestic manufacturers.

The 3 Types of Certifications

Indian Standards Institute (ISI): assures that a product complies with established Indian standards, assuring standard compliance and the safety of the ultimate customer.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS): is available to international producers in order to certify that foreign-manufactured items meet Indian standards.

Compulsory Certification Scheme (CRS): applies to all electronically created items made anywhere around the world

Therefore, we can safely say that BIS Certification for Air Conditioners requires a CRS

Is the process to apply for BIS Certification for Air Conditioner hard?

To answer your question, let’s run you through the steps involved:

1) On the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) site, the manufacturer’s profile has to be created.

2) For a BIS approved laboratory, the Test Report Format (TRF) has to be created.

3) Following TRF creation, the lab uploads the report to the BIS portal under the client’s profile.

4) Foreign candidates have to designate an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) and submit an affidavit and undertaking in accordance with Form A/B. While Indian candidates should provide an affidavit and undertaking in accordance with Format C.

5) Furthermore, the online form is then sent along with the relevant papers and cost.

6) The certificate, then, is provided based on testing, not on a factory inspection; as a result, the CRS certificate is provided if the product meets the BIS (CRS) standards.

Now that you are aware of the steps to get BIS Certification for Air Conditioner, you can fairly say that the steps are easy.

If you are completely familiar with the standards that apply to Air conditioner certification criteria to comply with, providing product samples to India, and other topics, you do not need to read any more. If not, this procedure will be significantly more complex.
