What is BEE? Bureau of Energy Efficiency: General Overview

Introduction

On March 1, 2002, the Indian government formed the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under
the necessities of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. Within the general framework of the Energ
Conservation Act, 2001, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to help within the creation of policies
and techniques that encourage self-regulation and market principles, with the first goal of
reducing the Indian economy’s energy intensity. With the active participation of all stakeholders,
this can be accomplished, leading to accelerated and sustained energy efficiency adoption across
all sectors.

Why do you need a BEE registeration?

BEE Registration is a power consumption grading system for household electrical appliances and
equipment that runs from one to five stars. A product with a higher star rating will save you more
money in the long run. The BEE Registration is designed to provide consumers with information
about a product’s power usage trend.

BEE registration is obligatory for some items, although it is optional for others. Many product
categories are included in the needed list, including frost-free freezers, color televisions, all types
of air conditioners, distribution transformers, tube fluorescent lamps, LED lamps, electric
geysers, and direct-cool refrigerators.

BEE Star Labeling is applicable to a wide range of products, including washing machines,
microwave ovens, ceiling fans, computers, scanners, solar water heaters, and many others.
All manufacturers of the products listed in the mandatory plan must register with BEE.
According to BEE, if the manufacturing unit is located within India, the factory will apply directly;
however, if the manufacturing unit is located outside India, such as for a foreign manufacturer
with no office in India, the first importer or any business organization assigned as an Authorized
Indian Representative (AIR) will be required to apply for BEE Registration on behalf of the
manufacturer. Dealers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers are not eligible for BEE
registration.

To apply for BEE Registration, information such as trademark details, factory details, product
details, product samples for testing, and some necessary forms and documents must be
prepared. If the factory is located outside of India, such as in the case of a foreign manufacturer,
an Authorized Indian Representative will be necessary (AIR).

How to get a BEE certification?

There are three stages to the BEE registration process:

1) Registration of a company

The applicant (Manufacturer/Trader/Importer) must first register a login account on the
BEE star labelling website to get the models licensed

2) Testing

A product must be tested only by NABL accredited or ILAC MRA signatory laboratories in
accordance with the applicable IS standard Model before it can be registered under the
BEE star labelling scheme.

3) Register Model under the Company

The applicant can register the model under his account on the BEE star labelling website
after the firm registration and testing are approved. The applicant must pay INR 1000 for
each product to be licensed.
